Good Morning Everyone,
First let me just say THANK YOU for all of your support and on-going positive encouragement that you have been sending out to me. I read every email, private message on social media and all the comments on the videos. I appreciate all of you taking the time out of your life to connect with me. I appreciate all of you.
This information is primarily for my members from Ontario, Canada who are concerned with obtaining CEU’s through the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO.)
Currently these are the CEU’s I have been accredited for by the CMTO:
2 CEU’s Category “A” – Online Shoulder Course
2 CEU’s Category “A” – Online Leg & Foot Course
Many of you have contacted me asking why I never submitted an application to the CMTO for CEU’s for the online courses for the Knee and the Hip & Pelvis.
In May of 2016 when I was preparing to release the Online Course for the Knee, I submitted a CEU application to the CMTO. I was informed from the CMTO that:
Effective May 2016, CMTO no longer pre-approves courses or assigns Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for submitted course materials. Courses that have been granted previous approval will continue to remain on the CMTO website until the three-year term has expired.
Consistent with previous practices, a course provider does not require CMTO’s pre-approval to offer a course for registrants. However, course providers are encouraged to offer information that demonstrates how the course learning outcomes align with the Interjurisdictional Practice Competencies and Performance Indicators (PCs/PIs), the CMTO Standards of Practice, the Self-Assessment Tool or other supporting resources, so registrants may make an informed decision.
The following information has been taken directly from the CMTO’s website from this link:
http://www.cmto.com/for-registrants/quality-assurance/continuing-education/Does CMTO pre-approve courses and learning activities?
CMTO does not pre-approve courses or learning activities. Instead, registrants are responsible for selecting learning opportunities that align with individual learning goals, enhance professional knowledge and/or improve existing skills or techniques. To support the selection of appropriate learning activities, registrants are encouraged to reference the resources below:
- Interjurisdictional Practice Competencies and Performance Indicators(PCs/PIs);
- CMTO Standards of Practice;
- Self-Assessment Tool;
- Massage Therapy Scope of Practice definition;
- CEU criteria;
- CEU Category A and Category B definitions;
- Approved modality; and
- OnlineCEU course search
Does CMTO provide a list of approved CEU courses?
While CMTO does not pre-approve courses or learning activities, courses listed in the online CEU course search are provided as an option for registrants.Continuing Education Cycle
Continuing education cycles are three years in duration, beginning on November 1st and concluding on October 31st.
Registrants are required to report completion of CEUs online between November 1st and November 30th of the year the continuing education cycle concludes.Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Over the course of each three year continuing education cycle, registrants are required to obtain a minimum of 30 CEUs and demonstrate diversified learning by actively participating in a variety of professional education activities that meet the following criteria:
- the activity must be an activity where learning takes place;
- the topic that is learned about must be related to a Massage Therapy competency or modality; and
- the learning outcome must relate to the practice of Massage Therapy.
Those of you who are planning on submitting to the CMTO for CEU’s for either the Online Course for the Knee or the Hip & Pelvis, I have read through the CMTO’s documentation and determined where Ligamentous Articular Strain Techniques fits into their classifications.
Remember that previously the CMTO has accredited:
2 CEU’s Category “A” – Online Shoulder Course
2 CEU’s Category “A” – Online Leg & Foot Course
Category A
Learning activities for Category A relate specifically to the definition of Massage Therapy as stated in the Massage Therapy Act:

CMTO Scope of Practice – Modalities
- Deep Connective Tissue
- Joint Mobilization
- Myofascial Release
To complete Category A requirements registrants may choose to:
- participate in workshops, seminars or courses related to Massage Therapy;
- review books, articles or videos related to Massage Therapy;
Activities, Competencies, Modalities and Codes
Learning Activity
- ABA – Reviewing books, articles or videos – provide the name of the publication reviewed, the learning outcome and how it relates to the practice of Massage Therapy.

I hope that this information has been helpful for you. If you require more detailed information that the CMTO requires in order for you to possibly acquire CEU’s, please let me know and I’ll assist in any way I can.
Once again, thank you so much for all of your support and encouragement over the years. I greatly appreciate it.
-Robert
